Good inspection prep isn't about guessing — it's about going through the same points the inspector checks. Most of the remarks we see at Aktiv Bilsyn could have been avoided with 15-20 minutes of checking at home the night before. Here's the checklist, point by point.
1. Lights and bulbs
By far the most common cause of a remark. Have someone walk around the car while you test:
- Low beam and high beam — both sides should work and shine evenly
- Indicators — front, rear and side markers, including hazard lights
- Rear lights and brake lights — check both brake lights by pressing the brake while the car is stationary
- Number plate light and rear fog light, if the car has one
Most bulbs can be replaced yourself in a few minutes with a car-specific bulb kit — it's the cheapest thing on the list to fix if you find a fault.
2. Tyres
The inspector checks tread depth, damage and visible cord layer. The legal minimum in Denmark is 1.6 mm tread depth for cars, but we recommend replacing tyres before you get that low. Also check:
- Uneven wear — can indicate incorrect tyre pressure or the need for wheel alignment
- Bulges, cracks or visible cord layer on the sidewall
- That tyre pressure matches the recommended values (usually found on the door frame or fuel flap)
3. Brakes
You can't inspect the brakes yourself, but there are a few warning signs worth listening and feeling for before driving in: a scraping sound when braking, the car pulling to one side, or a brake pedal that feels softer than normal. If you notice any of these, it's better to have it checked before booking than to risk a remark.
4. Windscreen and wiper blades
Stone chips and cracks are only a problem if they're within the driver's wiper field — but they tend to spread, so it's cheapest to get them fixed while still small. At the same time, check:
- Wiper blades — streaky or worn blades give poor visibility in the rain
- Washer fluid — top it up so you can demonstrate that it works
5. Exhaust and visible leaks
Look under the car for wet patches on your driveway or garage floor — this can be a sign of an oil or coolant leak. Also listen for unusually loud or rattling noise from the exhaust, which can indicate a hole or loose part.
6. Number plates and small things
Number plates must be clearly legible and securely fastened — dirty or loose plates can result in a remark. Also check that the seatbelts work and aren't frayed, and that the horn works.
What if my car still gets a remark?
It happens — even to cars that have been thoroughly prepared. If the car gets a remark, the fault needs to be fixed and the car has to go through a re-inspection. At Aktiv Bilsyn, a re-inspection costs 300 kr., regardless of vehicle type, and you can book it as soon as the fault is fixed.
